Freshwater Aquarium Supplies

Establishing a freshwater aquarium is as much an art as a science, so knowing what equipment works best saves painful trial and error, which can cost hundreds of dollars and many fishy lives. Whether looking for a simple ten gallon aquarium or a massive freshwater masterpiece, a small investment creates a miniature world.

Patience

Patience means more to a successful aquarium than any equipment or tools. Taking time to set up an aquarium, establish proper water conditions and slowly adding fish ensures a healthy aquarium. Anyone thinking they can purchase an aquarium today and have it filled with fish tomorrow is not going to have that aquarium long. After selecting the proper equipment, purchase only one or two small, durable fish, such as mollies, barbs or guppies. After a couple weeks, add a few more more, then a few more, but remember not to overfill the tank.

Tank size

The width and length of a tank determines how many fish a tank can hold, not depth or volume. Oxygen enters the water through the water's surface area. The standard rule is one inch of fish per gallon of water, but only in a standard tank. In a cone-shaped tank, with less surface area, the number drops. The best tank has a wide surface and a shallow depth.

Filter types

Under-gravel filters were once standard accessories in tanks, but now cartridge filters dominate freshwater aquariums because they clean easily, move more water and provide significant aeration. They cost slightly more than under-gravel filters but are well worth the investment.
