Tips to Choosing the Best Home Aquarium

Aquariums are a captivating way to bring a piece of nature into your home. If you are thinking about getting an aquarium for the first time, there are several things you need to consider to help insure that your foray into fish keeping is a sucess.
Bigger is better
Most experts can tell you that the smallest tank you should consider is 10 gallons, as smaller tanks cannot support more than a few small fish. If possible, buy an even larger tank, which allows you to have even more fish. Keep in mind, however, that a large aquarium full of water is very heavy. You need to have a sturdy stand or table to support the weight. A 20-gallon tank is a good standard starting size if you have room for it and is large enough to provide many years of enjoyment. Most tanks are rectangular, but depending on your available space, you may want to look at square, round or octagonal tanks.
Start with freshwater fish
Exotic saltwater fish may tempt you to try a saltwater aquarium, but if you do not have previous experience caring for fish, it is best to start with a freshwater tank. Freshwater fish are typically less expensive and generally a little less sensitive to their environment, and there are plenty of tropical varieties with eye-catching coloration. Once you are adept at managing the water conditions in a freshwater tank, you are more likely to have success with saltwater varieties.
Home aquariums are a favorite hobby for many people. Just make sure you select the right size and setup for your home and lifestyle, and you can enjoy your new hobby for many years.
